How Do Vending Machines Know What Coins You’re Putting In Them?

the slot for coins have retractible sides so when you insert a coin the walls get pushed out and the machine registers the size of it

because there is a weight and measuring thing in there that can tell if it is fake or real, and some of the new ones scan the coin.

weight, size, and the teeth on some coin edges
I think they check the paper money with some kind of scanner that checks the patterns and stuff on the bill
