It won’t be available to everyone. It will be done by finger print recognition and the inmates will only get what has been prescribed for them. It’s not going to be a free for all. Methadone is a very cheap medicine to produce, it’s certainly cheaper than forcing someone into cold turkey. Generally they need sleeping pills and anti depressants, counselling etc. It’s easier and cheaper to just give them the methadone. Obviously this doesn’t solve the problem of addiction. Often it’s crimes committed to get drug money that have put them in jail in the first place. So, it’s just perpetuating the cycle. I think there should be more support to get prisoners off drugs. The methadone program is a cheap option that clearly doesn’t work.

Yawn. That creates another addiction to a synthetic opiate which will rapidly become a trade commodity hence funding heroin purchase and inside / outside corruption.
Heroin junkies in UK immediately sell freely prescribed methadone right outside of chemist front doors and then go and score smack within the hour. Or ven less time.
Why dont the police simply follow them to the dealers ?
All the UK do about real problematic issues is talk and repeatedly paper over the cracks.
The best thing that jail can offer an addict is that they will turkey and break the addiction cycle.
And how easy did they become addicted in the first place. Why is it so conveniently available. Where are the police ?

Given that many people are in prison for drug related crime I think it’s a good idea, help get them off the drugs that put them there in the first place.
I’d like to see people who get jailed for non-violent crimes committed to feed a drug habit have their record cleared more quickly than usual under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act if they can prove they’ve got themselves clean of drugs.

In many parts of Southeast Asia, the penalty for drug addiction is death. Perhaps a machine that gives lethal injections by surprise.

Instead of substituting one drug for another how about making them quit looking for a way to avoid life and teach them how to deal with reality?
