While I wouldn’t recommend wasting your time by counting by hand, as some others may prefer, there are some general rules to follow when looking for such automation equipment for your vending business.
As to bill counters… Don’t worry about counting speed, it shouldn’t be your primary feature. Consider how much desk space you have (footprint), how many bills you need to count in a given session (capacity), and ultimately price. You get what you pay for in this type of equipment. Since machine handling of currency made out of cotton fibers is a less-than-perfect science, pay a little extra for the service and support of the company backing the equipment.
You can find buyer guides on eBay, possibly Amazon, and certainly around the Internet. A vendor article that I bookmarked that explains it better than I will here is:

The guide isn’t exhaustive, but it’s a great primer. Once you learn about the type of equipment, definitions, and what to look for, you’ll have a better time shopping around for whatever fits your needs.
Also, whatever equipment you do purchase, be sure to clean it with compressed air regularly to keep the sensors clear of dust.
In coin sorters/counters… A mixed coin sorter will run a lot slower than a dedicated coin counter. The key is to find a machine that fits your level of use (home, light commercial, commercial, heavy duty) with a matching price. Personally, I stay away from the counters and sorters below about $150 due to jamming and quality issues.
If you can be a bit more specific in what your volume of use would be, I can probably help narrow it down further.

Just use your hands and brain chief. I deal with about £3000 coins a day. Any machine will just get in your way.
